Sanctions against 4 troublemakers in Burundi (update)

(B2) The European Union on Thursday (October 1) adopted travel restrictions (visa bans) and an asset freeze on four people, whose actions “ undermine democracy or obstruct the search for a political solution to the current crisis in Burundi, in particular by acts of violence, repression or incitement to violence, including by acts constituting serious violations of human rights the man “, has just announced a press release from the Council. This measure comes into force this Friday, after publication in the Official Journal.

According to our information (*), the 4 people on the list are:

  • the Deputy Director General of the National Police, Godefroid Bizimana ;
  • the Chief of Staff of the Presidential Administration (Presidency) in charge of matters related to the national police Gervais Ndirakobuca aka Ndakugarika,
  • the agent of the National Intelligence Service, Mathias/Joseph Niyonzima alias Kazungu, considered to be one of those responsible for helping to train the Imbonerakure paramilitary militias, to coordinate their action and to arm them, including outside Burundi;
  • theformer General Leonard Ngendakumana, considered "responsible for grenade attacks, as well as incitement to violence". Former "Chargé de Missions de la Présidence" until the end of 2014.
