(BRUSSELS2) Cathy Ashton toughened her tone on Sunday after the UN Security Council adopted a resolution calling for an asset freeze, travel ban, arms embargo and referral of the International Criminal Court. (To see the text of the resolution)

Sanctions applied urgently

"The European Union fully supports this resolution and will implement the restrictive measures as a matter of urgency. The EU had already started working on restrictive measures, such as asset freeze, travel ban and arms embargo; preparations are therefore already well advanced. The formal adoption will take place as soon as possible to allow full and immediate application of the measures."

The violence is worsening in Libya. It's not tolerable

"What is happening in Libya cannot and will not be tolerated by the international community. The violation of human rights must stop immediately. Gaddafi and the Libyan authorities must know that their unacceptable and outrageous actions will have consequences. I I have already said this. I urge him to stop the violence to reach a peaceful settlement of the situation that is acceptable to the people of Libya. The people of Libya have spoken and Colonel Gaddafi must listen to him."

The perpetrators of this violence must be held accountable by international justice.

“Those responsible for attacks on civilians will be held accountable. Impunity for the crimes committed cannot be, will not be tolerated. This is the whole point of the Security Council resolution and the decision of seize the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court."
