(BRUXELLES2) "The friendly approach" is a mode appreciated by European navies in the Indian Ocean. in order to make their action better known but also to have a good knowledge of local practices.

Purpose: information

The aim of these approaches is to learn about maritime movements in the area as well as strengthen relations with local pirates » we specify at the HQ of Atalanta. The number of dhows in the Gulf of Aden has greatly increased as the end of the southwest monsoon approaches. And this allows fishermen to go back to sea... but also pirates. The Italian ship ITS Zeffiro thus proceeded Thursday (October 1) to a "friendly approach" of a Yemeni dhow (photo) in the Gulf of Aden. With the Italian visiting team, a Djiboutian who provides the necessary contact and translation. As for the Spanish ship Meteor, who joined the European force EUNAVFOR on June 15, he conducted a series of "friendly" approaches on 23 dhows in a limited time of 3 days at the end of September. In some cases, according to Atalanta HQ, the sailors of the Meteor provided technical assistance, even medical care if necessary, and in all cases water and food.
