The ICRC calls for a ceasefire in Syria. Georgieva asks not to politicize aid

(BRUSSELS2) The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC??) called today (21 February) " the Syrian authorities and all other actors involved in the ongoing violence » Implement a ceasefire for at least two hours every day in all affected areas to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid. " The current situation requires an immediate decision to implement a humanitarian pause in the fighting“, explains Jakob Kellenberger, the president of the ICRC. " In Homs and other affected areas, entire families have been stuck in their homes for days, unable to get out to get bread, other food or water, or to get medical attention. "This two-hour break a day in the fighting would allow the " ICRC staff and Syrian Arab Red Crescent volunteers enough time to provide aid and evacuate the wounded and sick. (*) For her part, the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid, Kristalina Georgieva, appealed not to politicize aid. " Conditions continue to deteriorate (in Syria). And in several cities, people suffer from violence ". " I appeal to the Syrian government to help the population. And I call on all parties to respect the neutrality of humanitarian workers. Humanitarian assistance must reach the entire population and must in no way be politicized. she said.

(*) Since February 11, Syrian Arab Red Crescent and ICRC teams have managed to enter the cities of Homs, Bludan, Al Zabadani and Madaya (Rural Damascus) to provide humanitarian assistance to vulnerable populations.
