UN asks for logistical and military aid from Europe
(BRUSSELS2) The EU's Political and Security Committee (PSC) is meeting this afternoon to examine the request for UN assistance. Ban Ki Moon, the Secretary General of the UN has indeed orally transmitted to the Spanish Deputy Prime Minister, De La Vega, who was in Port de Prince (Haiti) this weekend requests for support on 4 points.
• naval logistics - which could be carried out by the EU Member States present nearby (France with Martinique-Guadeloupe, Spain with their "catastrophe" base in Panama, the Netherlands from Curacao)
• protection and security: 140-150 gendarmes from the European Gendarmerie Force could be sent. But it could also be an ESDP mission or a coalition of goodwill. This force could leave quickly “We are awaiting the formal proposal from the UN,” Miguel-Angel Moratinos, the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, told me.
• engineering (bridges and roads): a Spanish team is already on alert (a Spanish diplomat told me).
