Training in Berbera for the Somali Coast Guard
(B2) Be able to read maps and scanners, understand the maritime situation as a whole, at a given time, and thus manage and coordinate the responses of all Somali agencies to maritime security threats (accidents or incidents), all from an operating room.
This was the objective of the training that the EUCAP Nestor mission carried out from 14 to 20 February. The training of the 10 students took place in the coastal town of Berbera (Somalia), where a temporary operating room was built and equipped to serve the future Maritime Operations Center of the Somali Coast Guard.
Part of the training was conducted aboard the German corvette FGS Erfurt (F-262), of the Atalanta operation, which came specifically to Berbera. Emphasis was placed on maritime communications. An operational operations room is vital for the communication and surveillance capabilities of the Somali Coast Guard, as well as for controlling their vessels that patrol coastal waters to respond quickly to emergencies, accidents and incidents.
