A British support ship in EUNAVFOR
The RFA Lyme Bay, an auxiliary landing ship, joined the European operation Atalanta on October 16. It's rare enough to be noticed. Since 2008, the British Royal Navy has only sent a ship to the European operation once. The RFA Lyme Bay is a large amphibious ship, allowing to have 350 people and equipped with helicopters. He has been regularly deployed in the region, in Bahrain, in support of British Navy minehunters for the past 3 years. But the RFA Lyme Bay should not stay long, just a month, before joining the Operation Cougar units in mid-November.
End of mission for the Zefiro
The Italian frigate Zeffiro has just completed its mission in the Indian Ocean. Leaving on May 16, from the port of Taranto, she had been engaged since June 6 in the EU anti-piracy operation (EUNAVFOR Atalanta). It was relieved on October 6 by the Libeccio. South Korean succession at CTF 151
The South Korean ship ROKS Choi Young has joined the anti-piracy coalition CTF 151 (under American impetus). He relieves the ROKS Wang Geon. As Commodore Jeremy Blunden of the British RFA Fort Victoria explained: “Having witnessed the first class work done by ROKS Wang Geon, I very much look forward to working with ROKS Choi Young to ensure the safety of navigation for merchant ships passing through the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden. »
Two Americans kidnapped off Nigeria
Two Americans, the captain and chief engineer of an oil supply boat, were abducted on Wednesday (October 23) off the coast of Nigeria by pirates who attacked their vessel, off Brass, Bayelsa State October 24. 11 people were on board the ship, nine others were released immediately. The circumstances of the kidnapping are relatively unclear. Piracy off Guinea is more based on the theft of equipment and goods on board, and sailors held hostage during the operation. But they are rarely held captive for ransom.
