Two German ships engaged in the Mediterranean in Operation EUNAVFOR Med

Frigate SchleswigHolstein F516(B2) The two German ships engaged in the rescue operation in the Mediterranean, the frigate Schleswig-Holstein (F-516) and auxiliary and support vessel Werra (A-514) stopped off in Sicily. But as my colleague points out Augengeradenaus, it is not just a resting phase. But of a change of mission for the two ships which passed, since June 30, under the command of the European operation to fight against traffickers (EUNAVFOR Med).

The ships will also be equipped with new communication terminals, to be able to correspond in real time both with the maritime headquarters of the operation located in Rome and with the command of the force located on the Cavour. Rescue at sea will remain part of their mission, but the main thing will be surveillance and recognition of smugglers' ships.

The German detachment is commanded by Captain Thorsten Mathesius, while the Schleswig-Holstein is under the command of Commander Marc Metzger and the Werra by Lieutenant Commander Stefan Klatt.
