Kosovo: bomb attack in northern Kosovo

(BRUSSELS 2) On Monday morning (14 October), a bomb attack was perpetrated in the municipality of North Mitrovica against the property of Nebojsa Maric, a Kosovo Serb and employee of the municipality's Ministry of Finance, causing major property damage. An act condemned by the international community. UNMIK (the United Nations Interim Mission in Kosovo) strongly condemned the violence. “These cowardly acts of violence are condemnable and seriously undermine security and stability in the region,” declared Farid Zarif, the Special Representative of Ban Ki Moon (UN). UNMIK SRSG calls for a prompt and thorough investigation into this incident. “I would also like to stress that the competent criminal authorities must take effective measures to prevent such acts of violence”, added Zarif.

Worry

« These acts of violence must stop.", he said. With the assassination of an agent of the EULEX Mission last September, near the municipality of Mitrovica, this incident worries while municipal elections take place on November 3rd. “I have personally received strong assurances from all stakeholders in northern Kosovo that acts of violence and intimidation will not be tolerated, and I look to local leaders to ensure full collaboration with law enforcement. Any misguided attempt to undermine stability during the electoral process must be treated as a matter of major priority”, warned the UN Special Representative.

It should be noted that election observers from the European Union were deployed in the country to observe the elections; the observer team was led by Italian MEP Roberto Gualtieri (S&D).
