The USS Kauffman, an American ship, member of the NATO "Ocean Shield" force, foiled a pirate attack in the Gulf of Aden in the early morning hours of August 9. The attack took place in the international corridor and aimed at Ice Explorer.

When the helicopter intervened, the pirates stopped their attack and "threw weapons and equipment overboard", according to Operation Ocean Shield HQ in Northwood. During the boarding team's visit, the soldiers were therefore only able to seize a few piracy utensils (such as ladders). But nothing more. The pirates were left free.

Three ships are currently taking part in NATO's "Ocean Shield" operation, placed under Danish command: theEsbern Snare (Denmark), the By Zeven Provincien (Netherlands) and theUSS Kauffman (USA).
