A second Hungarian deminer died in Afghanistan

(B2) Hungarian Captain Krisztian Nemes, a demining expert, was killed on July 12 while trying to defuse a homemade explosive. The 32-year-old soldier had been sent to Afghanistan a few weeks earlier to replace Lieutenant Gyula Kovacs, who himself died in similar circumstances on June 10, at the age of 30.

Afghanistan Deadly Zone in June
Afghanistan does not yet kill as many people as Iraq, but it is becoming ever more dangerous. From year to year, the number of deaths increases regularly: 130 in 2005, 191 in 2006, 232 in 2007, and already 146 in mid-2008, according to the site iCasualties, generally knowledgeable. A report compiled by AFP speaks of the "deadliest month" for June 2008 with 49 soldiers from the IFAS (International Security Assistance Force) and the American coalition (Enduring Freedom) dead, most of them by bombs.

Since 2001-2002, the operation would have caused 895 deaths. The United States paying the heaviest price (558 dead), followed by the United Kingdom (110 dead) and the Canadians (89 dead since 2002, cf. mosaic of the victims made by Radio Canada), Germany (25). France with 12
death.

The IFAS spokesperson's explanation is simplistic; more men, regions covered, fights, listen on RFI.

Civilians first victims
And even then we do not count the civilian victims made by each side. The CICR (International Committee of the Red Cross) counted no less than 250 dead or wounded in various incidents in a few days, between July 4 and July 8! In particular the attack against the Indian embassy, aerial bombardments carried out by the allied forces or shootings in which civilians are "mistakenly" targeted. Franz Rauchenstein, head of the ICRC delegation in Kabul, thus had to launch a new appeal to all belligerents so that they respect the civilian population.
