A brand new prison in Ramallah
(B2) The brand new prison in Ramallah (Palestine) has been completed and has just been transferred to the Palestinian Civil Police by the UN on 24 April. The establishment can now "accommodate" up to 200 prisoners - including women and minors - and has new equipment and international standards: security installations, kitchen, rooms for visits, laundry and recreation areas ( including a garden to "enjoy the sun"...). This refurbishment project aims to improve the conditions of detention of prisoners as well as the working conditions of prison staff. It lasted seven months and was set up by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). It was Canada that funded the project, to the tune of $1,25 million. An expert from the European mission EUPOL COPPS also advised the UNOPS team, particularly on security issues.
