(BRUSSELS2) 25 Burundian soldiers have just been trained in the subtleties of on-board protection (EPE) by French sailors from Aconit and the Estonian EPE.

This training took place in two stages, in Mombasa, Kenya, on March 16 and 17. Part took place at the quay, on board the Aconit for the theoretical part and on a container ship regularly chartered by AMISOM and the World Food Program (WFP), for the practical part. During the first day, the different aspects of piracy, the organization of a protection team and the different possible situations and reactions were discussed. The second day aboard the container ship provided an opportunity to put the Burundian protection team into situation by confronting them with a skiff attack then an assault on the ship.

This training will enable AMISOM to have its own VPD teams to protect vessels that shuttle between Kenya and Somalia to deliver supplies.
