An EU liaison office soon to open in Benghazi (Maj)

(BRUSSELS2) Catherine Ashton officially confirmed before the European Parliament today (11 May) her intention to open a " European Union office in Benghazi ". " We will thus be able to go further in supporting the population, civil society, the Interim National Transitional Council and Mr. Jibril, and the reform of the security sector.. The High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs cited three areas in which the EU could intervene: education, health and border security ". According to our information, it would not be a delegation or an embassy as such, but little more than a liaison office. (Update) This technical assistance office should consist of a few people at the beginning, and then expand as needed. It will open as soon as possible “says one in the entourage of Lady Ashton. A set-up mission is already on site to examine the practicalities of this installation (building, security, etc.).

We can remember that the opening of such an office was part of the findings and proposals of the evaluation mission, led by A. Miozzo, who had been in Benghazi last month. And, before the conflict escalated, the diplomatic service had planned to open its 136th delegation in Libya.
