Delors tackles the post of the Union's chief diplomat
(B2) In an interview taken by my colleague Richard Werly for the Swiss daily, Le Temps, and the Belgian, Le Soir, Jacques Delors, former President of the European Commission and former Minister for the Economy, shows that he has kept all his strength of mind. Reacting to the idea of a finance minister for the euro zone (idea launched by JC Trichet of the Central Bank), he believes that “it's a wacky gadget”. And to add: "Has European diplomacy worked better since its creation, through the Treaty?" of Lisbon, of a pseudo “minister for foreign affairs of the EU ? ”... A kick for the High Representative, Catherine Ashton, but just as much for the Member States, in particular for Nicolas Sarkozy and Angela Merkel, of whom he criticizes, in a sharp way, their last meeting at the beginning of the week.
