News BlogEEAS High Representative

On the day the Egyptian revolution triumphed, where was Cathy Ashton?

Where was Cathy Ashton, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs of the EU, the Friday when Mubarak fell? The question is probably not very interesting, as a spokesperson for the Commission told me: "modern means (electronics, telephone, etc.) make it possible to work remotely...". But she is symptomatic of a state of commitment. According to our information, on Friday February 11, Cathy Ashton had, in fact, simply returned home to London, after her trip to New York at the Nations- (*) And it was at the last moment that she decided to return to Brussels, to take stock and make a short statement to the press (at 18 p.m., see the video). Phew! Honor was therefore safe. Perhaps we should consider moving the headquarters of the "High Representative" to London...

(*) Me Ashton's spokespersons did not want to confirm this information. But they also didn't want to deny it, contenting themselves with a subtle 'sideways' response. One told me:Honestly, I do not know". The other told me: "She was there, live for the conference".
