Yes to a European adoption policy
(Archives) MEPs want a European policy for adoption and made it known yesterday in Brussels during a press conference.
The two UDF deputies, Jean-Marie Cavada - the former producer of the Marche du Siècle, and former child of the DDASS - and Claire Gibault - adoptive mother of two African children - wanted to point out the problem, in particular, of Romanian children. In Ceaucescu's former homeland, despite all efforts, orphanages remain places of abuse. With added difficulty, now.
After having had a very lax policy in terms of adoption, in the 1990s, Romania adopted, at the request of Europe, drastic legislation. A moratorium has been placed on all ongoing cases. As a result, nearly 2000 quasi-adopted children are still waiting for their adoptive parents. A "bullshit" loose Jean-Marie Cavada, very lively. “It's not a Romanian problem, it's a European problem. explains Claire Gibault. A European legal framework could thus be based, according to MEPs, on "simple principles: no theft, no child trafficking, (but) no child deprived of the chance of adoption on the territory of the Union" .
A written declaration is circulating within Parliament, which has already collected 408 signatures, out of 732, asking the European Commission to act. But, despite the personal commitment of the Commissioner for Justice, the Italian Franco Frattini, the European executive has other fish to fry. The instruction to "legislate less" comes from above, from the President of the Commission, José-Manuel Barroso. “I'm counting on public opinion,” replies Jean-Marie Cavada. “If we were as demanding on human criteria as on economic criteria, Europe would be a marvelous planet”.
