The transfer of Oliver Ivanovic, accused of war crimes, to Mitrovica

(BRUSSELS2) Oliver Ivanovic, former leader of the civic party SDP (moderate party), was transferred from Pristina prison to Mitrovica prison. The Mitrovica judges' examination committee has, in fact, given a favorable opinion, announces the European "rule of law" mission EULEX.

The case is very sensitive. Held in pre-trial detention since January 27, this Kosovar was one of the "guardians of the bridge" who blocked the main bridge in Mitrovica (called "Pont Austerlitz" by the French Kfor) and cut the city in two. He is thus detained for a war crime and suspected of the assassination of ten Kosovar Albanians in 2000. The Mitrovica investigating judge ordered the extension of his detention on February 27 for two months, i.e. until April 2014. reason: the leak risk of the accused and "the influence » that he could exert on the witnesses « if he is released ».

The arrest of Olivier Ivanovic, a Kosovar Serb, by EULEX forces had provoked strong protests from the Serb side.
