Spanish relay in Atalanta
(B2) The Spanish frigate Victoria (F-82) took over on Tuesday (November 5) from its sister ship Canarias (F-86), engaged since July in l’opération de lutte contre la piraterie de l’UE (EUNavfor Atalanta)
For the Spanish class frigate Santa Maria, la venue dans l’Océan indien n’est pas une nouveauté. Elle a participé, en effet, à l’opération anti-piraterie à trois reprises, participant notamment à nombre d’actions décisives de Atalanta (lire : 18 months after the start of the operation, Atalanta in offensive mode). Avec le navire amiral, ITS Marceglia, c’est le seul moyen naval de l’opération pour couvrir une zone quasiment aussi vaste que l’Europe.
L’ESPS Victoria appartient au 41ème escadron d’escorte de la marine espagnole et au groupe de combat 1 (COMGRUP-1) de la force d’action navale (Fuerza de Action Naval ou FAN). Basé à Rota, il a une certaine polyvalence lui permettant de mener des missions assez variées, notamment des opérations d’interdiction maritime ou de contrôle maritime.
L’ESPS Victoria also have took part in the embargo of Yugoslavia (Operation Sharp Guard), in deployments in the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf during the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq, in operations Active Endeavor et Enduring Freedom, comme à l’opération Sophia in Mediterranean.
