Les six officiers, six sous-officiers et un caporal-chef décédés appartenaient principalement au 5e régiment d’hélicoptères de combat (RHC) de Pau et au 4e régiment de chasseurs de Gap (faisant partie de la 27ème BIM brigade d’infanterie de montagne (cf. encadré). C’est une des plus graves pertes en nombre simultané de la France depuis l’embuscade d’Uzbin en Afghanistan, en 2008, qui avait coûté la vie à dix soldats.
A crash between two helicopters
Selon les premiers éléments donnés par l’army staff, mardi matin, c’est un accrochage entre les deux appareils — un Tigre et un Cougar — « éflying at very low altitude [which] would be the cause of the accident ". Both devices participated in “ a support operation for Barkhane force commandos in contact with armed terrorist groups ».
An operation in Mali's Liptako

L’entière confiance du président Macron
The President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, insisted on “ greet avec le plus grand respect la mémoire de ces militaires de l’armée de terre […] tombés en opération et morts pour la France dans le dur combat contre le terrorisme au Sahel ».
He also salutes the courage of the French soldiers engaged in the Sahel and their determination to continue their mission » et assure les militaires engagés dans l’opération Barkhane de « his full confidence ". The whole of Europe is in mourning
Très vite, les réactions sont tombées a Bruxelles. L’Union européenne a adressé « its most sincere condolences to the families of the French soldiers, engaged in the fight against terrorism in the Sahel » a indiqué la porte-parole de Federica Mogherini, la Haute représentante de l’UE, contactée par B2. Treize militaires tombés au champ d’honneur
The thirteen soldiers who died in action are the two crew members of the Tiger of the 5th Combat Helicopter Regiment of Pau (5th RHC), the five crew members of the Cougar (also 5th RHC), four operators of the Mountain Commandos Group (GCM) from the 4th Chasseurs de Gap Regiment (4e RCH), a GCM operator from the 93rd Mountain Artillery Regiment (93e RAM) and a GCM operator from the 2nd Foreign Engineer Regiment (2e REG).
The Minister for the Armed Forces Florence Parly gave, in a communicated, their identities that B2 therefore allows itself to reflect:

NB : Le lieutenant Pierre Bockel, l’un des deux pilotes du Cougar impliqué, est le fils du sénateur Jean-Marie Bockel, notamment ancien ministre (socialiste) de François Mitterrand, en charge du Commerce (1984-1986) et ancien secrétaire d’Etat (UDI) des Anciens combattants (2008-2009) et à la Francophonie de Nicolas Sarkozy (2007-2008). Très impliqué dans les questions de défense.
