The Commission publishes a recommendation “Maritime piracy”
(B2) The European Commission adopted on March 11 a recommendation on maritime piracy, more precisely on "measures for self-protection and prevention of acts of piracy and armed robbery against ships".
Issue: to oblige Member States to better disseminate to maritime operators the "Best management practices to discourage piracy in the Gulf of Aden and off the coast of Somalia".
This recommendation, it should be noted, has more political than legal value. It contains no sanctions against Member States which do not do their job "well". But the interest is also to have a text that is part of the "acquis communautaire" and can thus be "disseminated" to non-EU member states (candidate countries for example) or be included in negotiations with third countries (with which the EU concludes association or cooperation agreements)
