First prosecution in Greece against pirates

(B2) Greece will be able to prosecute pirates who had captured the MV Irene SL, a Greek supertanker released in April 2011 for ransom. The photos, collected by international anti-piracy forces and contained in a database managed by Interpol, enabled the sailors to recognize four of their captors. The announcement came after a meeting between Greek Police Chief General Nikolaos Papagiannopoulos and Interpol Secretary General Ronald K. Noble at the headquarters of the World Police Organization. Supported by the South African Police and in coordination with the European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) and Intertanko, an Incident Response Team (IRT) was sent to Durban in South Africa to investigate the scene of the crime and debrief the sailors held as victims of this hostage-taking.
