Who will represent the EU in the world: Czechs and others

(B2) Representation outside the EU is normally ensured by the country holding the rotating presidency of the semester. Sometimes this has no representation. So we have defined a designation mechanism (the last dates back to December 20, 2006) a real gem...)

The Czech Republic has a fairly dense diplomatic fabric, for a "small" country, without comparison with Slovenia for example. It will thus be present in several hot or sensitive regions of the CFSP/ESDP: Afghanistan, Belarus, Georgia, Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, Pakistan, DR Congo, Russia, Syria, Thailand, Zimbabwe...

It is also present in all the countries applying for or close to membership (Croatia, Turkey, Macedonia, Bosnia, Serbia, Moldova, Ukraine, etc.) with two exceptions (Montenegro and Iceland).

• If the Czech Republic does not have a representative, it is normally the next State of the presidency which assumes (Sweden). This is the case in Iceland, Uganda, Senegal,
Singapore, Sri Lanka...

• If neither have representation, it is another State, in turn, according to a principle of rotation (changing every 6 months, as long as the 2 "normal" rules are not applicable, according to the order in which the Member States must exercise the presidency) that applies. Which gives quite tasty results:
- Germany in Chad (military operation "Eufor")
- Italy in Sudan and Bahrain (US Navy base in the Gulf)
- Spain in Guinea-Bissau ("security reform" mission)
- Poland in Armenia
- Belgium in Congo (Brazzaville) and Azerbaijan
- Denmark in Burkina faso
- Finland to Nepal
- Hungary to Montenegro and Qatar.
- the Netherlands in Rwanda or Benin

Sometimes only one Member State has a representation in the country concerned. So he is the one who sticks to it - regardless of the presidency:
- Portugal to East Timor
- the United Kingdom in Belize and Gambia.
- France in Liberia or Eritrea
- Ireland to Lesotho

• Sometimes no country is designated, as in Somalia, but also in Swaziland, Bhuthan, Kiribati...
