Elements of the Slovak military police on board an Irini ship in 2022

(B2) Up to eleven members of the Slovak Military Police may eventually join the European Operation for Embargo Control in the Mediterranean Sea (EUNAVFOR MED Irini) for six months from March 2022.

This was proposed by the Ministry of Defense in Bratislava, according to the Slovak agency Tasr. They will be part of an intervention team on a ship flying the German flag. The Minister of Defense submitted his proposal through an interministerial procedure.

According to the current mandate, only five members of the Slovak army can serve in the operation. This is not the first time that the Slovaks are involved in an EU maritime operation. A similar commitment was made during operation EUNAVFOR Med Sophia, to fight against human trafficking (read: Slovaks in the Mediterranean).
