A EUTM Mali truck on fire on the road from Koulikoro to Bamako (v2)

(B2) A logistics truck of the EU military training mission in Mali was destroyed by fire last Friday (8.1). Luckily no other damage.

The truck was reported on fire in Baguinéda on the road between Bamako and Koulikoro, according to the press Malian. Which caught our attention. Here are the items we were able to gather.

On the way to Bamako

The incident occurred during the move from Koulikoro (EUTM Mali training center) to Bamako (1), according to a military source interviewed by B2. A Spanish Vempar truck (2) had been loaded with a 20-foot container (the standard in maritime matters). It was traveling alone (not in a convoy) when it caught fire.

Truck destroyed but not the container

The Malian firefighters of Koulikoro have " reacted quickly according to our interlocutor. They have " stopped the fire ". But there was no longer any way to save the truck. The truck has completely burned ". Fortunately, " the container itself and the material inside were not affected by the fire. The two Spanish soldiers who were in the cockpit are unharmed. They " weren't hurt at all ».

A technical malfunction

The incident is " currently under investigation ". But given the first results, it seems that the fire is " due to a mechanical failure of the brake system, which may have overheated ».
