The Portuguese Air Force's P-3C CUP+ originated from a Dutch P-3C modernization program (disposed of by the Royal Netherlands Navy in 2005 following budget cuts). It retains all the maritime patrol capabilities inherited from the P-3P, including anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare and search and rescue (SAR).

It has a set of sensors associated with a modern and fully integrated tactical mission system, allowing it to operate in both the maritime and land environment, thus meeting the general requirements of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions ( SRI).

  1. Hence the name of CUP as Capability Upkeep Program: theUD2.5 was converted to ASQ-227 mission computer and ASQ-78B acoustics system.
