EUBAM, Frontex, Italy join forces to fight against the mafia in Libya

(B2) The fight “against organized criminal networks” in Libya is getting organised. A pilot project was launched by the European Border Assistance and Monitoring Mission (EUBAM Libya), the European Agency for the Management of the EU's External Borders (Frontex) and Italy.

The Libyan administration responsible for coastal security (Libyan general administration for coastal security GACS) is the main beneficiary of this project. The trio's objective is to support the efforts of the Libyan authorities in the fight against organized crime networks. Are targeted: the smuggling of migrants, the smuggling of human beings and terrorism.

21 Libyan coastal security officers trained in February

21 police officers from the Libyan General Administration for Coastal Security were trained in Ostia, Italy. The training took place over three weeks between February 7 and 21. It grouped together theoretical, practical courses and life-size exercises. For example, the trainees had to approach a boat on which were seriously injured migrants and children, or even manage a crime scene in the rules of the art.

The course also has addressed the protection of fundamental rights and the gender issue we specify on the European side. The lack of women in the Libyan police force was felt during the practical exercises.

NB: The implementation of this pilot project follows the decision of the Council of the European Union, of December 17, 2018, which extended and modified the mandate of EUBAM Libya (read: The EUBAM Libya mission will be extended by 18 months).
