West of the Iron Curtain

« In 1989, I entered here in what was a political forum limited to a part of Europe, west of the iron curtain. The Parliament that I am about to leave is a genuinely European Parliament with legislative capacity. (...) Thanks to you, dear colleagues, I learned that listening, dialogue, mutual respect, the search for compromise, the obsession with the common interest were much more effective than the systematic confrontation which too often characterizes our national debates. Many of our national parliaments as well as a prestigious capitol would have a number of lessons to learn here said the South West MEP (2). A standing ovation (standing ovation) of the deputies greeted him... Rightly so!
