Sakharov Prize, the three nominees are…

(B2) Three names remain in the running for the 2018 Sakharov Prize. Their fights affect what Europe holds most dear: the freedom to think and express oneself.

Awarded each year since 1988 by the European Parliament, this prize rewards men and women who defend fundamental freedoms. Ten candidates, proposed by the different political groups, were submitted to the vote of the deputies of the Foreign Affairs, Development and Human Rights sub-committees on Tuesday 9 October. The winner will be designated on October 25 by the Conference of Presidents of Parliament and the prize will be solemnly awarded on December 12, during the plenary session in Strasbourg.

NGOs rescuing migrants in the Mediterranean. Namely, Proactiva Open Arms, SOS Méditerranée, Médecins sans frontières international, Sea-Watch, Sea Eye, Jugend Rettet, Lifeline, MOAS, Save the children, PROEM-AID and Boat refugee foundation. Since 2015, these NGOs have been carrying out search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean to try to save the lives of refugees trying to reach EU shores. Proposed by the S&D groups and the Greens.

Oleg Stentov. The Ukrainian filmmaker is serving a 20-year prison sentence for “ plotted terrorist acts “against the rule” de facto Russian in Crimea. He has become the symbol of dozens of Ukrainian citizens illegally arrested and sentenced to long prison terms by the Russian occupation forces in the Crimean peninsula. Proposed by the PPE Group.

Nasser Zefzafi. Moroccan activist, leader of Hirak, a protest movement in the Rif region of Morocco, fighting against corruption, oppression and abuse of power, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for "conspiracy against the security of the 'State". Proposed by the GUE group and 39 other MEPs.
