Cameroon abuses its strength in its fight against Boko Haram: Amnesty accuses

(B2) Amnesty International has been able to gather new evidence that demonstrates apparently unlawful executions by Cameroonian soldiers under the pretext of fighting Boko Haram.

Executions in due form

The NGO said, this Friday (August 10, 2018), to have recovered a new video which would attest to executions by Cameroonian soldiers. These images are in addition to the information collected on " numerous extrajudicial executions ". Other information corroborates widespread use of torture by the soldiers in their fight against Boko Haram in the Far North region.

The proof by the image

This video shows armed men lining up people lying on the ground or sitting against a wall, then shooting them with automatic weapons. A second salvo of fire ensures that no survivors remain. This is " new credible evidence supporting allegations that the Cameroonian armed forces have committed serious crimes against civilians says the NGO. Amnesty International thus asks “ the immediate opening of a thorough and impartial investigation. Those suspected of being responsible for these heinous acts must be brought to justice. »

No possible doubt about the status of the soldiers

This new evidence adds to previous videos recovered by the NGO (1). Each time, soldiers were clearly part of the Cameroonian armed forces are seen gunning down civilians. Weapons, conversations and uniforms were analyzed by Amnesty researchers to make sure and try to date the videos.

"Good cause, bad means", bis

The NGO has already published a investigation report overwhelming, in July 2016. With the evocative title: "Good cause, bad means: violations of human rights and justice in the context of the fight against Boko Haram in Cameroon". He already mentioned "unjustified or excessive use of force", extrajudicial executions, etc.

Request for prosecution

« There needs to be real accountability for these killings. Faced with this pile of solid evidence, the fact that the Cameroonian authorities deny en bloc is akin to complicity and tacit support for these crimes. » denounces the NGO.
