European planes mobilized in the face of forest fires in southern Albania

(B2) The European Commission has triggered the mobilization of two additional Greek planes to come to the aid of Albania, the European Commission announced on Thursday (10 August).

In the grip of several forest fires in the south of the country, Albania had requested European assistance on August 2. Greece then sent two planes which operated in southern Albania between August 3 and 6. While the EU emergency satellite mapping system (Copernicus) provided eight satellite maps to the Albanian authorities.

On Monday (August 7), it was Italy that called for help. Three planes - 2 Canadair and a reconnaissance plane - French had then been sent to the spot.

NB: The European Civil Protection Mechanism makes it possible to co-finance up to 85% of the transport costs of the countries offering their support via the Civil Protection Mechanism. After Portugal, France, Italy and Montenegro, Albania is the fifth country to have benefited from European support during this summer of 2017.
