(B2) In order for the G5 Sahel joint force to be operational before the end of the year, the Europeans organised, from 1 to 12 May, a new training course for 23 officers from the armies of Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad and Burkina Faso.

Objective: deploy the joint force of the G5

The two weeks of training focused on a clear objective: to enable liaison officers from the five countries to better understand a deployment of the G5 Sahel Joint Force. The theoretical courses were therefore put into practice thanks to a practical exercise, making it possible to " test their skills, reflect on their role and experience the frictions inherent in a multinational operation in a complex environment “, according to the mission.

Operation Gecko

Operation Gecko, which lasted three days, consisted of an active deployment of the new G5 Sahel Joint Force in the Liptako-Gourma region. The various teams of trainees were confronted with "numerous incidents which they approached" according to a triptych of watchwords " which served as a red line throughout the exercise: cooperation, coordination and communication ».

Learn to work together

The first week of the course focused on shared understanding of the role of a liaison officer, the situation in the region, the context of the G5 Sahel Joint Force and key regional actors, including the United Nations, the Cross -Rouge, EUCAP Sahel Mali and Niger with whom these officers will have to interact on a daily basis. Initiations to interview modalities were also given by EUTM press officers.

Note that this is the third training of this type. The premiere took place in August 2016. Read: First EUTM Mali joint training for G5 Sahel officers
