EUCAP Somalia strengthens its action in the regions

(B2) With a new exclusive focus on Somalia, the European Support Mission for Somali Security Forces (EUCAP Somalia) wants to strengthen its action at local level. A new field office was inaugurated in Garowe, Puntland State on Tuesday 7 March. The next day, a second team moved to Hargeisa, in the northwest of the country (in Somaliland).

In these new offices, the members of the mission (between 4 and 7) will work on " strengthen the local capacity of the local maritime police to exercise effective maritime governance on its waters” explains the spokesman of the European mission. In addition to the fight against smuggling, the fight against piracy and the control of the coastal zone on land and at sea, this local approach " will address a wider range of threats and challenges, in particular fisheries inspection and enforcement, maritime search and rescue ».

The training – and the equipment – ​​will be accompanied by support work for the authorities to “ the drafting of legislation and the establishment of judicial authorities necessary for criminals to be tried and sentenced.
