A soldier who returned from EUTM RCA dies… of malaria

(B2) The European Central African Armed Forces Training Mission (EUTM RCA) is in mourning.

Brigadier-in-Chief Anthony Rémy, of the 1st Artillery Regiment, died on Tuesday (7 March) following a serious form of malaria, contracted in the Central African Republic during the European mission. The symptoms only appeared after his return to France (February 11), said the Ministry of Defense in a press release. Anthony Remy had served for three months in the "force protection" of the EUTM RCA mission.

This is the 57th person to have died in a European mission or operation, since the beginnings of the CFSP, according to our count (read: *In Memoriam. In the Central African Republic, this is the fifth French soldier to die on a mission, and the second engaged in one of the European missions in the country. In November 2014, Corporal Moana had been repatriated from Bangui to Paris, for the same reasons (malaria) while he was taking part in the EUFOR RCA mission (read: French EUFOR RCA soldier dies of illness).

A volunteer, trained gunner

Born August 8, 1987 in Belfort, Anthony Rémy joined the army in 2010 as a volunteer in the Army. On July 11, 2012, he embarked on his first short-term mission to reach New Caledonia. On his return to France, he was appointed to take up the position of artillery driver. On July 1, 2013, he moved to the 1st artillery regiment, and was appointed brigadier on August 1, 2014. On November 3, 2016, he was deployed to CAR (Central Africa) as team leader. He was promoted to brigadier-chief on December 1, 2016. During his commitment, he carried out three "Vigipirate" type missions.
