Europeans, worry a little about Libya (Verhofstadt)
(B2) The leader of the Liberal and Democratic Group (ALDE) in the European Parliament, Guy Verhofstadt, called on the European Union to intervene before the UN Security Council to support more determined action by the international community in Libya.
« The EU must submit a request for intervention to the UN Security Council. To allow a state in pieces to emerge on our doorstep, under the control of warlords and radical emirs, would be a tragic mistake. If Europe bears a responsibility in the current situation, it is not for having overthrown Gaddafi, but rather for not having helped the legitimate government which succeeded him. But it's never too late to do the right thing, in the interest of Libya, North Africa and Europe as a whole." explains Guy Verhofstadt in an op-ed published by the French daily l'Opinion, this Sunday.
- NB: A much more responsible point of view than those in charge of NATO who discarded themselves in Riga on the international community; the few words of Jens Stoltenberg in Riga are, to say the least, illustrative of this absence of reflection (read: The bazaar in Libya, it's not us (Stoltenberg)
Incidentally, the former Belgian Prime Minister notably points the finger at the EUBAM Libya mission " Before the situation degenerated, the EU had reacted well by creating Eubam, a mission aimed at helping the Libyans to better control their borders with a dedicated objective to the fight against terrorism and crime. But after 2 years of existence, no Libyan border is secured by Eubam, which has swallowed up 38 million euros for its own security and whose agents work in Tunis or Malta… far from the areas criss-crossed by AQIM, Boko Haram and other traffickers of arms, drugs and human beings. »
Couldn't say better...
