Aidar battalions perpetrators of human rights abuses in Ukraine (Amnesty)

(B2) In a recent report, the result of recent field research in the north of the Lugansk region, Amnesty International denounces “ the multiplication of human rights abuses committed by the Aïdar volunteer battalion”. Aïdar is one of the thirty " volunteer battalions which have emerged in the wake of the conflict and have been more or less integrated into Ukrainian security forces seeking to retake separatist-controlled areas. And the NGO has identified kidnappings, illegal detentions, ill-treatment, thefts, scams and possible executions attributable to Aïdar. Some of these actions constitute “war crimes”. The Ukrainian authorities must ensure that all volunteer battalions, including Aidar, are placed under "effective chains of command and control", Amnesty stresses. In addition, they must investigate promptly on allegations of human rights violations and bring those responsible to justice”.
