Central African Republic. The Commission sets up a humanitarian air bridge
(BRUSSELS2) The European Commission has just announced that it is setting up an "air bridge" to the Central African Republic, from Douala (Cameroon), to support humanitarian operations in the country.
The plane, managed by ECHO Flight (the EU's humanitarian air transport service), will arrive tomorrow in Cameroon and will make daily rotations between Bangui and Douala, allowing the delivery of humanitarian goods as well as personnel in the country. The carrier, a CRJ 200 jet, has a capacity of 50 passengers or five tons of cargo.
The Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid, Kristalina Georgieva, does not hide her relief after the French intervention. " In recent days, reports from the CAR have brought the worst news of horrifying massacres » she said in a statement sent to B2. " The arrival of international forces in Bangui and their deployment in the provinces represents the only source of hope for security for millions of people who have lived in fear for a year. »
