(BRUSSELS2) "The refoulement of refugees is simply not allowed either in accordance with EU obligations or international obligations" assured Michele Cercone, the spokesperson for the European Commission, this Tuesday (November 19), in response to questions from colleagues during the midday briefing. Member States should not carry out such pushbacks. “It is up to member states to decide what measures they take to guard their borders and it is their choice” he clarified before adding. “We've always said walls don't solve any problems. What solves the problems is a coherent and structured management of migratory flows and flows of asylum seekers. “Anyone who arrives on European territory should not be turned back, should not be denied this possibility. It is an obligation which derives from the International Convention, but which is also based on the values of the European Union. » A warning that targets, without naming them, Bulgaria in particular but also Greece.
