(BRUSSELS2) Member of the European "Battle group", led by the United Kingdom and comprising units from the United Kingdom, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Sweden, the Latvian contingent trained for three days (from 1st to November 3) in eastern Latvia, in the Latgale region around Daugavpils. According to the Ministry of Defence, nearly 120 national guards and professional soldiers took part in the infantry exercise.

The purpose of the training was to maintain the contingent's military capabilities and improve its performance within the battle group, the ministry said. This is the contingent's third and final training scheduled for 2013. The last two took place in Adazi, near Riga and in Great Britain. This training takes place while training exercises are underway within the Latvian NATO contingents as part of the "Steadfast Jazz 2013" and "Baltic Host 2013" operation.

Comments : The battlegroup is the only one to be on duty for the second half of 2013. But the question of their usefulness remains more than ever posed. The politico-military specialists of the European Union were precisely working on this subject today. Or as the Dutch Defense Minister, Jeanine Hennis-Plaschaert, said bluntly today before the European Parliament: "use or lose". Taking up a slogan that is flourishing in the corridors of Brussels (NGV)
