2 million Syrian refugees!

(BRUSSELS2) While world diplomacy dithers over possible strikes and European diplomacy is paralyzed (Europe in cabbage, paper to follow), the situation of refugees is getting irreparably worse. A new milestone has been reached: we are at 2 million refugees.

Two million, an “appalling milestone”

« The number of refugees who have fled the war in Syria to reach neighboring countries today reached the appalling milestone of two million, half of whom are children said Kristalina Georgieva, Commissioner in charge of humanitarian aid, on Tuesday. "Ijust imagine, four times the population of Manchester or Lyon and a little more than the population of Warsaw ". The number of Syrian refugees doubled between March 16 and early September. That is a very clear acceleration. And again, this figure only takes into account registered refugees. It can be estimated that the total number of Syrians who have left their country to reach Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan is higher (not counting immigrant workers, particularly in Lebanon, who have chosen not to return to their country).

A situation that will not improve

« As tragic as it is, the truth is that with the violence becoming increasingly ferocious, brutal and inhumane, the wave of refugees will continue to grow. says Georgieva. In the context go to war, she calls " once again, for the fighting to stop and for a political solution to be found urgently ».

NB: we can consider that this figure is not a maximum, but one stage among others.
