A new Head of Mission for EUMM Georgia

(credit: EEAS)(BRUSSELS2) A new Head of Mission is due to take up his duties at the European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM Georgia) as well as the readers of the Club already know that. The Political and Security Committee (PSC) approved the principle on Friday (September 13). He is an Estonian, Toivo Claar, hitherto head of division at the European diplomatic service (EEAS), in charge of coordination and human resources policy, and former defense adviser to the Estonian president.

He replaces the former Polish general and diplomat Andrzej Tyszkiewicz, who left before the summer. The latter had not left a very good memory, by positions that were not very diplomatic, and pro-Tbilisi. Which had somewhat harmed the mission's reputation for neutrality. The Russian and Abkhazian authorities on the spot had demanded his departure. During the interim, the mission was led by Deputy Chief, Swede Gerard A. Fischer.
