Fences in Ditsi "An unacceptable situation" according to the head of EUMM
(BRUSSELS2) Tense situation in Georgia. Residents of Ditsi (very close to Tskhinvali) protested against the installation of fences, in order to mark the separation with South Ossetia (where the Russian security forces are present). On Monday, May 27, the various protagonists, the Georgian interior minister and the Russian border guard services, met to discuss the situation. European observers from the EUMM Georgia mission were present at the request of the participants.
An “unacceptable” situation
« EUMM has seen an increase in the construction of fences and obstacles, which has a negative impact on local populations” said the head of the mission, Andrzej Tyszkiewicz. On Tuesday, May 28, the ambassador returned to the site to take stock of the situation and gather additional information in order to prepare for the meeting on Friday, May 31 of the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM). This mechanism brings together, once a month, all the players around the table. Tyszkiewicz recalled that " freedom of movement for communities (…) is one of the priorities of the mission ". The installation of these fences is “unacceptable”. The situation in the region is likely to become tense due to " increasing the presence of security actors ».
