Additional €33 million for AMISOM

(BRUSSELS2) The European Commission announced today (Tuesday 19 March) that it will grant an additional €33 million to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). This sum will allow the mission to continue its mission and to reach the total of 17.731 soldiers authorized by the UN. The European grant makes it possible to cover the operational costs of the headquarters located in Nairobi, the salaries of the military and the costs of the police and civilian components of the mission. Since 2007, the European Union has provided €477 million to AMISOM.

An essential mission for the stability of the country

The Commission emphasizes the progress made in Somalia since the establishment of AMISOM, which has enabled “ the Somali government to regain control of much of Mogadishu and other parts of the country ".
