Timbuktu resumption
(B2) After Gao, the soldiers of Operation Serval and the Malian units took control of the airport and accesses to the city of Timbuktu during the night of Monday (January 28) to Tuesday. Supported by several hunting patrols and helicopters from the airmobile group (GAM) and surveillance means (Atlantique 2, drone), the GTIA 21eRIMa seized Timbuktu airport while simultaneously paratroopers from the 2nd foreign parachute regiment (2nd REP), in other words the foreign legion, jumped on the northern outskirts of the city.
More than 6000 men engaged in the field
On the French side, today 3500 soldiers are engaged in Operation Serval, according to the General Staff of the armies. The BPC Dixmude vessel thus docked in Dakar on Monday and disembarked the GTIA of the 92nd infantry regiment, armed with SGTIAs from the 92e RI and 1er marine infantry regiment (RIMa). As for the African contingents, they total 2900 men: 1400 Chadians, more than 500 Nigeriens, more than 350 Togolese, nearly 200 Nigerians, more than 150 Burkinabés, around a hundred Beninese and around fifty Senegalese.
