(BRUSSELS2) Seychelles has for the first time transferred Somali pirates to prisons in Somaliland and Puntland. Sentenced by a Seychelles court, the 9 pirates will serve the rest of their sentences in Somalia, following an agreement intended to relieve the prisons of the archipelago.

The pirates were brought back by two planes from the Seychelles government company - Island Development Company (IDC) - and escorted by the Seychelles Police. "I'm happy to see that the operations went well and I expect more transfers in the new year — said the Seychelles Minister of Interior and Transport, Joel Morgan —. I thank all those who participated in this success, especially the prison service, the police force, the office of judicial affairs, IDC and UNDOC",.

The Somali prison rehabilitation program is only beginning to bear fruit. Financed mainly by the United Nations Office against Drugs and Crime (UNODC), it should eventually allow the 88 Somali prisoners still present in the prison of the archipelago to be sent back to their country. the Mountain Posede.
