(BRUSSELS2) The Danish transport ship MV Torm Kristina narrowly missed, on Saturday (December 15), being hijacked by pirates. While on his way to the port of Mascatte (Oman) for a logistics visit, two pirate skiffs appeared. As the want best practices, the crew took refuge in the citadel and immediately sent a message a distress signal. the HDMS Iver Huitfeldt was instructed to assist him. This Danish frigate - which is currently operating under the NATO flag as part of Operation Ocean Shield - was then paying a visit to the port of Muscat. After only 3 hours and 90 nautical miles, the Danish vessel was on site. At the sight of the approaching frigate, the pirates seem not to have asked for their rest. And they fled realizing that it was impossible for them to take control of the boat. A boarding party from Iver Eightfeldt then boarded to ensure that no pirates remained on board the transport vessel.

No protection team was on board at the time, but it was on its way, said the Vice-President of the Torm transport company. "Torm never crosses the Gulf of Aden without guards on board.he assured. For his part, Vice-Admiral Christian Canova, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of NATO Maritime Command, once again insisted on the adoption of Best Management Practices (BMP). "When Best Management Practices, such as citadels, are in effect aboard merchant ships, we are able to react quickly and deter pirates", did he declare.
