The Syrian opposition calls for the creation of a “Safe Zone” in Syria

(B2) The notion was for the moment still vague. The Syrian opposition, united within the SNC, Syrian National Council, called in late December for the creation of a safe zone in Syria for civilians and the establishment of humanitarian corridors to facilitate access to the ade. It also asks, supporting study, " a rapid intervention to stop the massacres which reached the level of a genocide ". This security zone would not only be for humanitarian purposes but to allow the opposition to organize itself.

« United States and European Union sanctions have begun to cause serious economic damage to President Bashar al-Assad's regime and its ability to fund the apparatus of repression. It's a long-term job (…). But the sanctions have not stopped or slowed the killings, arrests, rapes and torture of Syrians. More than 5000 people have been killed, 50.000 are missing and 59.000 imprisoned writes the SNC. But this is not enough. The SNC has submitted demands to the Arab League and the United Nations to exercise the “responsibility to protect”.

He believes that different avenues of intervention are possible, as shown by a study carried out by the Strategic Research and Communication Center which weighs the necessary logistical elements and the risks, of a No Fly Zone, directly inspired by the Libyan model. " At present, the most achievable option would be to establish a “safe area” in the country to provide refuge for embattled civilians from other cities and towns, a base of operations for the designated political leadership of the Syrian opposition as well as a military command center — in other words, a Syrian Benghazi. »

" It is the easiest option for military intervention in Syria ", is it written, in the manner of the Provide Comfort operation, which could be conducted " by NATO or an Anglo-French coalition - Turkish and American ».
