C. Ashton in India. A focus also on security issues

The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, will be in India on Monday and Tuesday (16-17 January) to meet representatives of the Indian government. Objective: at a time “when India and the EU face significant challenges, (…) strengthen our political and…economic ties and create opportunities (…) to address regional and global challenges.” Emphasis should also be placed on safety. During this trip, she will meet Defense Minister AK Antony and National Security Advisor SS Menon. On January 16, C. Ashton will co-chair the EU-India ministerial meeting with Foreign Minister SM Krishna in Bangalore. A discussion as a prelude to the 12th EU-India summit (February 10 in New Delhi). On this occasion, the High Representative intends to “underline the importance of developing cooperation between the EU and India in the field of security as a sign of stronger political commitment between the two partners”. She also wants to reiterate the EU's commitment to conclude “as soon as possible a comprehensive and balanced free trade agreement between the EU and India. »
