0 increase for the budget of the European Defense Agency in 2012

(BRUSSELS2) The budget of the European Defense Agency will not increase in 2012. Inflation will not be taken into account. It is therefore a truly zero budget which was adopted at 0 million euros.

Several options were on the table. And the worst was a… three-year budget. The defenders of European defense should have shouted hurray, as they have supported this position for years. But no. Because the option put on the table was a freeze over 3 years. Suffice it to say, a defeat. For lack of anything better, everyone fell back on an annual budget. The other option on the table was a measured increase of 2%, which compared to the agency's budget, is relatively low (600.000 euros). The United Kingdom, however, maintained its usual position: not a penny more, total freeze. This is ultimately the only result that was obtained. The High Representative, Cathy Ashton, did not wish to make this subject a focal point with the United Kingdom, thus refusing to “ put pressure » about his country of origin.

Note that pooling and sharing projects are essentially financed with voluntary contributions from States which represent a volume much higher than the agency's own budget.
