A European Parliament delegation to the Horn of Africa

(BRUSSELS2 to Strasbourg) A delegation from the European Parliament will visit the Horn of Africa from October 30 to November 2, 2011. Objective of the mission: “ assess the European Union's response to the humanitarian and food crisis in the region and explore long-term structural solutions to chronic food insecurity in the Horn of Africa »

Field visits will be carried out in northern Kenya, on the border with Ethiopia. And various meetings with the Kenyan government and the various humanitarian and development actors present in the region are planned.

For the French Michèle Striffler (Modern Left / UMP / EPP) who will chair the delegation, “the warning signals are clear: soaring food prices – partly due to abusive speculation – fierce competition for access to land and water, insidious climate change and drought, land grabbing by foreign investors for the purposes of export or production of biofuels. » But beyond the humanitarian situation, it points the finger at the governments of the region. " The solution to food insecurity is eminently political. There is a deficiency in States vis-à-vis their populations and the governments of developing countries must, with the help of the European Union, take their responsibilities by developing a vision, policies and their own agriculture.”
